Caring For Your New Tattoo

Tattoo artists have many different methods in caring for new tattoos. There are many schools of thought. One is that it is best to wipe plasma away from the area immediately after getting the tattoo every fifteen minutes to prevent dead skin cells from accumulating, and forming scabs. The other is to leave the area bandaged for the first two hours to help to keep air-born bacteria away from the wound. Some artists recommend wrapping the area for twenty-four hours. As you can see the opinions on what is best varies widely, so talk to people, especially the tattoo artist, before deciding on the best course of care if you get a tattoo.

After removing the bandage, some tattoo artists recommend washing the tattoo with a mild antibacterial or antimicrobial soap. It is recommended that you don’t use anything abrasive like a washcloth. Pat, rather than rub, the area clean with a towel to dry completely. Ointment that is enriched with vitamin A and vitamin D is recommended, but any antibacterial ointment is acceptable.

Alternative Ideas

Another school of thought is to apply a thin layer of ointment without washing the area. Wait to see if bubbles of fluid appear, and if they do, wipe and reapply another thin layer of ointment. Repeat this step until no more bubbles appear. When oozing stops, apply a thin layer of ointment four times a day.

Some people say that it is fine to get a new tattoo wet, as long as it doesn’t become saturated. Some artists recommend avoiding submerging a new tattoo completely for at least two weeks. In contrast to this school of thought, some artists recommend bathing the area in hot water early and often. Avoid skin-to-skin contact with people or pets for two weeks. If you develop an allergic reaction, discontinue using the product you are applying and see a health professional.

Scabbing and peeling is normal in the first few days. If you apply a warm moist compress for five minutes twice a day, this should help to soften scabs, and they will eventually fall off. As it heals it will start to itch, but it is advised that you don’t scratch it. One thing that is agreed upon universally is to avoid the sun, or apply sunscreen to the tattoo when outside to maintain it for years to come. It is also the general consensus that new tattoos should be kept clean.
